Two of the most common questions we get are, “Is point-of-care dispensing legal?” and “Is it relatively new?”. To address the second question, physician dispensing has actually been around longer than the United States. And, in 46 states, physicians can participate in the profits from their practice, including point-of-care dispensing. 

The consensus is that point-of-care dispensing will grow, driven by the demands of patients and benefits for the patient. Patients increasingly expect higher levels of customer service from healthcare providers- i.e. ability to access medical records, schedule appointments online, and receiving prescriptions directly from their provider’s office. In addition, the costs related to patients failing to fill prescriptions are rising; not starting and/or adhering to prescription therapy is said to be one of the primary drivers of rising healthcare costs.
